“Wherever and however you intend to give birth, the experience will impact your emotions, your mind, your body, and your spirit for the rest of your life” – Ina May Gaskin Although it’s considered the norm these days, going to the hospital as a healthy low risk woman to have a brand new baby when that’s where sick people go doesn’t make much sense to me. But listen y’all, the environment you birth in matters. Not just for your and your babes health, but mentally and emotionally. Not to mention, most OB’s have never seen a birth from start to finish. Typically, they’re trained in surgery (c-section) and the US has the highest c-section rate of all developed countries. *i am NOT saying c-sections are terrible, I’m saying that they’re not always necessary. I encourage you to dig into this yourself.* Then there’s what’s called the “cascade of interventions” — hook ya up to an IV, constant fetal monitoring (baby doesn’t like this), give pitocin (baby and body really don’t like this), give epidural, “oh you’re not progressing fast enough, we need to do a csection” when really, you and your body weren’t given the chance. As soon as you step foot in that hospital, you’re put on a timer. You get to the hospital, the bright lights, the monitors, the strangers, the cold air (why are hospitals always freezing lol), the different environment, everything — “when we substantially change our environment during labor and birth from comfortable, familiar + warm, to new, cold and unknown — our body takes note. Our primal brain can perceive this as a threat, disrupting the process of physiological birth. Your labor could slow, stall, or even stop as a result.” Oh, and “you can’t eat just in case we have to do a csection” well listen y’all. If you don’t eat anything (light/high in protein), how are you going to have enough energy to push your baby out? And there’s no room for negative talk during this time, ok? Speak life. So much intervention when it’s not necessary. Ladies, we were MADE to be able to do this. Our bodies do not grow babies we cannot birth. *continued in comments*

Happy World Health Day!  Support Nurses and Midwives. Did you know that Women make up 70%, globally of health and social workforce, and nurses and midwives are a large portion of this? We challenge you to reach out to a nurse or midwife you know and say THANK YOU! Not only do they support and care for us pre and postnatally, but they are on the front lines helping to fight COVID-19 (not to mention countless other disease and crisis). The WHO (World Health Organization) will be highlighting and creating awareness ALL YEAR surrounding the work and status of nurses and midwives internationally. Check out the WHO website for more information and ideas how to support them. #supportnursesandmidwives #who #awareness #thankyou #70percent #welovenurses #midwivesrock

👐🏽Leopold's Maneuvers👐🏽 ⤵️ Leopold's maneuvers are four specific steps in palpating the uterus through the abdomen in order to determine the lie and presentation of the fetus. In summary the steps are : Step 1. The top of the uterus (fundus) is felt (palpated) to establish which end of the fetus (fetal pole) is in the upper part of the uterus. If either the head or breech (buttocks) of the fetus are in the fundus then the fetus is in vertical lie. Otherwise the fetus is most likely in transverse lie. Step 2. Firm pressure is applied to the sides of the abdomen to establish the location of the spine and extremities (small parts). Step 3. Using the thumb and fingers of one hand the lower abdomen is grasped just above the pubic symphysis to establish if the presenting part is engaged. If not engaged a movable body part will be felt. The presenting part is the part of the fetus that is felt to be in closest proximity to the birth canal. Step 4. Facing the maternal feet the tips of the fingers of each hand are used to apply deep pressure in the direction of the axis of the pelvic outlet. If the head presents, one hand is arrested sooner than the other by a rounded body (the cephalic prominence) while the other hand descends deeply into the pelvis. If the cephalic prominence is on the same side as the small parts, then the fetus is in vertex presentation. If the cephalic prominence is on the same side as the back , then the head is extended and the fetus is in face presentation. Click the link in bio to schedule a chat with me 💁🏽‍♀️
